I had an idea that I would record the progress of building the new Ravelin Sports Centre, here at the University of Portsmouth and post updates on the ARCLIB Instagram account. Afterall, it was right next door to the Library and we had a great view into the building site from the upper floors. However, I probably managed a couple of photos before we went into lockdown and I haven’t been into the University for more than 12 months now. So here’s no.1:
Thankfully, a handy video records some of the constuction – Wates Construction Limited is the main contractor. Building progress doesn’t seem to have been hampered by the pandemic and the new “sustainable, award-winning design” by architects, FaulknerBrowns, opens later this year. Visit this University webpage to have a sneak preview. Unfortunately, I think the new building will block the views of Ravelin Park in my favourite library study area. But that will be a good excuse to get outside and enjoy the biodiverse planting – even though it’ll be a few years before the trees grow. Truth be told, you probably won’t find me inside the Sports Centre, but I’m sure many other people, including members of the local community, will enjoy it.
So where will I go when its raining and I don’t want to sit in the park? I’ve found a new favourite space, right at the top of the proposed new Victoria Park Building by architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS). Watch the virtual fly-through to see where you’ll be able to find me in a few years!
